Step into a Bächle in Freiburg and you will marry here, or so they say. But why does water run through the streets at all? A walk through the old town, following the water.
A walk through Freiburg's old town, just under two kilometres, flat and almost entirely pedestrianised. You start and finish at Oberlinden, the small square with the big linden tree just inside the Schwabentor gate. The tram stops right next to it, at the stop Oberlinden.
You don't need to go inside anywhere or pay for anything. Every task can be solved outdoors. The cobbles are bumpy, and pushchairs still get through everywhere. Dogs are welcome. Mind the Bächle, the little water channels along the streets: they are narrow and deeper than they look.
Signs and plaques along the way are in German. You don't need to speak German to solve the tasks.
Ages 8 and up. Eleven tasks, a good hour and a half: searching, counting, a photo, an outline in the cobbles and a crocodile.
The route leads through Konviktstraße to the Minster, across Rathausplatz to the Martinstor gate and back to the linden tree along the Gewerbekanal. By the end you will know why Freiburg has its Bächle.
